Profile

Scott Thompson specializes in representing owners, investors, managers and developers in the purchase, sale, leasing, financing and management of real estate assets, loan restructuring, and distressed asset transactions. 

Mr. Thompson also focuses on golf course transactional and operational matters, and serves as Co-Chairman of the Firm's Golf Practice Group.

Previously, Mr. Thompson served as General Counsel with National Golf Properties, a public REIT that created the largest golf course company in the industry with its operating affiliate, American Golf Corporation.

Real Estate Experience

  • Represented Sequoia Canongate in the purchase of a distressed high-end private golf club in Denver, Colorado from the Lennar Company.
  • Represented Sequoia Canongate in the purchase of The Woodlands Resort in Houston, comprising five golf courses, restaurants, and a hotel.
  • Represented the Empire Company in the sale of a 400 unit apartment complex to a state pension fund.
  • Represented American Golf Corporation and its affiliates in the sale of approximately 80 golf courses and private clubs over the past four years; transactions included the sale of significant portfolios in the South and Midwest, as well as the sale of single golf courses and private clubs throughout the country; the transactions implemented American Golf's strategic plan to concentrate its portfolio of golf courses and private clubs in specific markets; American Golf and its affiliates continue to own and/or operate over 100 golf courses and private clubs located throughout the United States.
  • Represented Sequoia Canongate in the acquisition of over 20 individual courses over the last three years.
  • Represented Synergy Golf in complicated public/private acquisition and redevelopment golf project in San Diego County involving the Otay Water District.
  • As General Counsel of National Golf Properties, negotiated and managed the acquisition of over 100 golf courses and private clubs located throughout the US and UK; grew the company from 47 fee owned golf facilities to approximately 150 fee owned golf facilities from the Company's IPO in 1993 to 2001; such acquisitions included two of the largest portfolio transactions in the industry; negotiated and managed all ground leasing of such facilities to the Company's tenant/operators (primary tenant/operator - American Golf Corporation).
